As someone with long, thick, wavy hair, whenever I put my hair into a ponytail, I used to have a constant battle between trying to keep the weight off my neck and at the same time not have my hair pulled back so tight that I ended the day with an obvious bump where a hairband was or, worse, a headache from the tension.
